Virtual Marathon Training Series

As a lot of people will be starting their training plans in preparation for Virgin London Marathon & Virtual Virgin London Marathon, therefore we have designed a virtual monthly motivational running distance series.

Those who have trained for a marathon know, it is a long journey and motivation can come and go at times. Therefore we have designed a training series to keep you on track, to give you monthly target distances to tick off along your marathon training journey.

Irrespective of whether you are running the actual London marathon or virtual London marathon this training series is for you.

For the fast & furious, PB’s & Leader board placings are there for the taking!

For the newbies and charity runners, we have alternative motivation in training photo competitions, PB’s and stepping stone distances with some fun and smiles along the way.

Virtual Marathon Series

  • 5km May 2021
  • 10km June 2021
  • Half Marathon July 2021
  • 16 miles August 2021
  • 20 miles September 2021
  • Marathon October 2021

These distances are there for you to tick off along your journey, to achieve the required distances to have a successful marathon run.

Each distance provides a stepping stone of confidence along the way. Confirming your fitness, clothing, watch is charged enough, your breakfast is correct, your hydration and nutrition plan is also on point along the way.

If you are running in a specific running top, do your long runs and medal qualifying runs in your race day attire to ensure it all fits, doesn’t rub and if you carry music or gels, that the battery lasts or the gels don’t fall out.

5km

The virtual series is designed to encourage you to tick off the training distances you need to complete.

5km – 5km in May 2021 is to confirm you are on the right path to progressively move through the training plan to achieve race day success.

It would be beneficial to you to arrive in May and tick the 5km distance off, in week 1. If you achieve this, then the 10% increase per week, recommended training distance weekly increase will deliver you to October 3rd in prime condition.

If you are aiming to achieve your 5km by the 30th May, then you are flying close to the wire and have little room for error along your journey.

For the Newbie – this is the first landmark distance along your journey.

For the Seasoned Runner – this is a recovery run or a speed test to assess your fitness progression.

Irrespective of your ability, this distance is a stepping stone and shouldn’t be under appreciated.

The 5K run is a long-distance road running competition over a distance of five kilometres (3.107 mi). Also referred to as the 5K road race, 5 km, or simply 5K, it is the shortest of the most common road running distances. … From a physiological perspective, five kilometres is towards the low end of endurance running.

10k

10K race, which is 6.2 miles, is ideal for experienced runners who are looking for more of a challenge. It’s the second most popular race after the half marathon and requires a fitness level that balances strength, energy, and endurance.

The 10k road race is a great opportunity to get out there and go for it, with all the focus and structure of a race day event however on a smaller scale, take this opportunity to enjoy a running event.

½ Marathon

The half-marathon distance is an excellent endurance challenge for runners of all levels. It is a very popular distance and you will have many races to choose from. Find the one that will work best for your level and put in the training needed to finish strong.

It is wise to run a half marathon event, a training run is fine, however the benefits of running a race, is that it gives you the opportunity to rehearse all aspects of your race day.

You get to experience race day nerves, getting to an event, witnessing others getting nervous too and experience portaloo queue’s, feed & drink stations as well as the Finish Line elation.

Conversational and progression long runs

The most fundamental of the three approaches, conversational long runs serve a number of important purposes in a training programme. For runners new to the sport, they develop basic endurance and musculoskeletal strength. For marathoners, they help teach the body to better use fat as fuel. And for experienced runners, a conversational long run builds volume without interfering with other training elements.

Some think they can run a marathon at the same pace as a Half Marathon, well you can if you run your Half at your marathon pace. READ THAT AGAIN!

The 16miler is the perfect opportunity to test your:

  • Pre-Long Run Dinner
  • Pre-Long Run Hydration plan
  • Race Day Breakfast plan
  • Race Day Breakfast Hydration plan – even if you’re in a hotel!
  • Race Day Race Hydration and Nutrition plan & what you can carry and use.

It also confirms your race pace either by speed or Heart Rate.

However, at 16 miles you still have 10 miles to go to the finish, that’s why we recommend the 20miler!

20 miles

There is a lot of debate about this issue. But most running experts tell recreational marathoners that it’s not a good idea to run more than 20 miles at one time during trainingRunning that distance takes a toll on your body. You‘ll need a long recovery period, and you run a high risk of getting injured.

Most marathon training plans call for a 20-mile run four weeks before the race.

This distance is slightly controversial and I would say the most missed training distance, however anyone who has ran a marathon will tell you the marathon started at 20 miles! That last 10km is where you find out everything about going long!

The 20miler is the perfect opportunity to confirm your:

  • Pre-Long Run Dinner
  • Pre-Long Run Hydration plan
  • Race Day Breakfast plan
  • Race Day Breakfast Hydration plan – even if you’re in a hotel!
  • Race Day Race Hydration and Nutrition plan & what you can carry and use.
  • It also confirms your race pace either by speed or Heart Rate.
  • You can then rehearse your recovery plan and find what works and how you feel!
  • Mental confidence of going until a 20 appears on your distance tracker?
  • Confirmation of race nutrition & hydration plans
  • Confirmation of training nutrition, pre-event meals, race day breakfast and recovery protocols.

Marathon Advantage

Training for a marathon has many physical health benefits for the body. Improved overall health: Running regularly strengthens your heart by increasing your VO2 max (aerobic capacity) and helping keep your blood pressure and high cholesterol at healthy levels.

Congratulations! You are a marathoner. For months, you’ve focused on that one goal – had nightmares about it, over-analysed every niggle and spent sleepless nights fretting about what shoes to wear. Well, now you’ve gone and done it.
